The dark folk project Pororoka has released a cover and video on old riflemen’s song “Zakvitchaly Divchatonka” by Rifleman and poet Roman Kupchynsky.

The song was written in 1916 and is dedicated to the memory of Vasyl Malovanyi,
a junior officer of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Legion who was killed in the battle of Ukrainian forces against russian bolsheviks.

Roman Kupchynsky was among the first to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, a volunteer legion formed in 1914
as part of the Austro-Hungarian Army.
The Sich Riflemen later became the foundation for the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in the 1920s and,
later, for the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and for the modern Ukrainian Army also.

 

The video features footage of historical sites unrecognized by the state, including:
-The (presumed) grave of Hetman Andriy Mohyla, the only preserved hetman’s grave in Ukraine.
-The Cossack cemetery in Trakhtemyriv, the former capital of the Cossacks and the residence of Hetman Sahaidachny.
-An ancient cemetery in Zaliznyachka, Cherkasy region.
-An ancient cemetery in Kolodyste, Cherkasy region.
